Babil Khan: Following in his father’s footsteps while making his own path in cinema. Babil Khan, the son of the late legendary actor Irfan Khan, is currently making strides in the film industry. After making his acting debut with Qala, Babil is now in the spotlight with the streaming of his latest OTT film Logout. Babil recently opened up about his father Irfan Khan, their connection through films, and his own journey in the film industry. Let’s find out what he had to say.

  • What was your interest in cinema as a child? Were you influenced by films, or did this interest gradually develop over time?

Like all kids, I too wanted to watch Krrish and Dhoom, but when I was 8 years old, my father showed me Andrei Tarkovsky’s Stalker. Of course, I didn’t understand anything, and I slept through most of the movie. However, when I went to Westminster University in London for my film course and wrote my thesis, some core memories and impressions of Stalker resurfaced. During my teenage years, I fell in love with Iranian and Turkish cinema.

  • Your father made many remarkable films in his career. Are there any films that you like to watch repeatedly, or films that are closest to you, based on your mood?

Yes, I can tell you about five films: HBO’s In Treatment (2010), Life of Pi (2012), Paan Singh Tomar (2012), Lunchbox (2013), and Madari (2016). Also, if my mood is down, I can pick Qarib Qarib Singlle’   (2017) anytime and watch it.

  • Which scene from your father’s films do you like to watch over and over, and why? Does that scene hold any special connection for you, or does it bring back any particular memory?

The first scene that comes to my mind is from The Namesake (2006), where he gets a phone call informing him about Tabu’s father’s death. There isn’t a single word spoken in this scene. He just listens. That scene teaches you more about acting than any acting course. There’s also a small role in The Darjeeling Limited (2007) that is humorous in such a tragic situation. I love that. My team and I keep quoting dialogues from  Haasil (2003). There’s a great scene in that film where he is tied to a chair. I hold that scene in high regard.

  • Being the son of Irfan Khan, you must have many priceless memories with him. Can you share a special moment or untold story that’s very close to your heart and that the world hasn’t heard yet?

I don’t know how many people know this, but my father actually wanted to become a cricketer and played very good cricket. He was selected for the state team but didn’t have the money to go. He played cricket just like he acted. So, we both used to play gully cricket at home, and I used to bowl. Not only that, at the farmhouse, he even built a cricket pitch where we played. Here’s a funny thing: when he got out, he would get so angry and would take his bat and say, "It’s my bat, I’m going home!" He used to play football too, and just like a kid, he would say, "Where did the ball go? It went past the goal. You didn’t see it!" Just like a child! It was so much fun.

  • Do you think the industry sees you as an individual, separate from your father’s shadow?

Look, I don’t know about the industry, but personally, I don’t see it as a shadow. It’s like a beautiful ray of sunshine on a winter day. My father’s legacy is not limited to just acting. I’m not trying to fill the space he left behind, but I’m trying to be the best version of myself. I want to be as kind as he was and do work that influences people, makes them feel alive for even a moment.

  • It is often said that nepotism and the world of glamour lead many young people to become addicted to social media and their phones, which negatively impacts them. Are you facing any such habit?

No, I don’t have any addiction to my phone. My addiction used to be about getting validation from my phone. When photos got love, and people liked them, it felt good. But when I realized the impact, I understood that I was liking the image that others had created of me, and I got stuck in it. Then I realized that this is not self-worth; it’s just about pleasing others. So, my addiction to social media was just as much.

  • How does trolling affect you?

I generally don’t take trolling seriously anymore. Earlier, when people made trolling really dark, it would affect me a little. But then, I moved past it. Though, you do question small things like, "What is this?"
